preschool speech & language delays
autism spectrum disorders
pronunciation difficulties
social communication/play and group skills
auditory processing disorders
apraxia/oral motor-speech disorders
expressive language weakness
bilingual and trilingual language learning (Cantonese and Mandarin-speaking therapists are on staff)
AAC assessments and support
Areas we refer out for include feeding, stuttering (dysfluency) and voice.
As speech-language pathologists, we do not diagnose or treat dyslexia, but we do assess related skills such as phonological awareness, auditory discrimination, etc. which can contribute to reading/spelling difficulties. If your child's primary issue is reading/writing, we will likely want to work hand-in-hand with an educational therapist or reading specialist to address your child's difficulties.
We work with children up to the age of 12. We are also not able to take on cases if the child is not able to/unwilling to participate in therapy or has aggressive behaviors towards our staff.

Bright Stars Speech (formerly Hamaguchi & Associates) has been a leading innovator in the field of speech pathology in Cupertino since its founding in 1996. In fact, one of our biggest referral sources are other speech-language pathologists.
We pride ourselves in thorough, comprehensive assessments that are recognized throughout the Bay Area as the "gold standard" of reports, using a combination of standardized tests, informal observations, input from parents and other professionals, and plain old good detective work.
Because we start with this solid foundation, our treatment plans lay out a clear, understandable blueprint for how to accomplish the goals we have created for each child.
Our staff takes great pride in the extensive amount of initial training and online education they receive. We pride ourselves in having a rather large "bag of tricks" filled with creative strategies and engaging methods to help your child improve his/her speech, language, auditory or social skills.
We not only do therapy, but we innovate as well! We develop cutting-edge apps, motivated to help the clients that we serve. Patti Hamaguchi also does field-testing for new tests (clients can volunteer to participate) so that our profession has better tools to diagnose children. We at Hamaguchi are at the forefront of treatment and assessment!.

During the pandemic, our practice made the decision to provide services online, via Zoom teletherapy, to our families. Now we are back to in-person services, but the good news is we have found that we can be amazingly productive, even online! Through the use of cool green screens, online games, Google slides (virtual notebooks) and basic good therapy, the families at our practice now have the option to have teletherapy or in-person services.
This allows clients who live in other parts of California the ability to access our services, as well as families who struggle with the afternoon Bay Area traffic issues, or simply prefer to have the therapy online.
The silver lining in the pandemic is that we have learned and evolved as a practice and do see that, while there are some children who are a better fit for in-person therapy, there are huge benefits with virtual learning for nearly all the children we serve! With this added option, our families have more flexibility for how their child receives services.
We also offer teletherapy via Zoom, a great alternative!

Join us for the Hanen Parent-Training Programs!
For Parents Like You!
The renowned Canadian Hanen Program has been helping parents since 1976. Specially designed to give you step-by-step instructions as to how to help your speech-delayed child, you will learn with other parents in the comfort of your home via Zoom, how to help your child engage, talk and play! The next available openings are March 2025.
Bright Stars Speech is renowned for our top-notch assessments. Patti Hamaguchi is the co-author/author of two widely-used standardized tests and a recently published third test. Our practice is truly on the cutting edge of diagnostics, and participates in research for new testing instruments. We will figure out what your child is struggling with, and develop an appropriate plan to work on those skills. And if we don't think we're the best fit for your child's needs, we will refer you to someone who has the expertise/therapy setting that meets your child's needs.
Our speech-language pathologists create an individualized, custom treatment plan for each child, with input from the parents on which goals to prioritize. Because we have a number of staff members, we are able to match a child's personality, learning-style and type of case to the speech pathologist who would be a good match. We offer in-person therapy at our office, teletherapy, or limited appointments in your South Bay home. New clients typically have 1-2 sessions of some kind of assessment when starting at our office with prior assessments. This allows us to get current baseline data that we can use to measure progress, as well as update goals to create an initial treatment plan. Assessment sessions are billed at twice our usual therapy rate. If you do not have a previous assessment, we will need to start with a full assessment.
We make learning fun! Through games, puppets, toys, creative strategies and cheering your child on, we can help your child progress and achieve those goals.
Children often need help to transfer their learned social language skills into real-life play/social settings. We don't use a cookie-cutter curriculum, but rather tailor our groups to the needs of the children in the group. Does your child struggle when losing a game? Or have difficulty engaging in conversations or playing cooperatively? Perhaps negotiating politely or being flexible is a struggle or your child needs help learning how to engage in imaginative and dramatic play. Then we've got you covered. We make groups fun! Many of our clients (parents and children alike!) have formed long-term friendships with their fellow group members.
By learning in a small group with other parents via Zoom in the comfort of your own home, you get support and input from people who understand what you are going through, along with the guidance of our experienced Director of Clinical Services, Kristen White. In March 2025 we will be offering individualized Hanen programs. Not only do you walk away from the program armed with strategies that are proven to improve your child's language development, but you also gain a valuable support network of peers.
Fun conversations, sharing experiences, talking about our hopes and our dreams, being understood.....is what we all want for our children. Our speech pathologists are here to help your child strengthen these skills!
